The Philadelphia Phillies (8-3) and Atlanta Braves (2-9) will take the field at Truist Park on Thursday looking to claim the early edge in the season series. The two NL East rivals have each won a game in the three-game set in Atlanta.
After losing on Tuesday, the Phillies bounced back with a 4-3 win in a back-and-forth game last night. Taijuan Walker pitched a scoreless 4 2/3 innings, Bryce Harper and Trea Turner each homered, and José Alvarado locked down his second save of the season with a four-out performance.
Harper hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the seventh inning. Turner waited until the ninth, and the perfect time, to hit his first long ball of the season. The solo shot proved to be the difference.
The Phillies' win moved them a half game ahead of the New York Mets for first place in the division, while the Braves still sit last, six games back. The Phillies can widen that margin tonight when they send their newest rotation arm to the mound.
Phillies vs. Braves probable pitchers, April 10
- Jesús Luzardo (2-0, 1.50 ERA) will take the ball in the series finale for the Phillies. The lefty has looked lights out since joining the rotation. He has recorded 19 strikeouts over 12 innings in two starts in his Phillies career. He dominated the Los Angeles Dodgers in his last outing, allowing just two hits in seven innings, striking out eight.
- Spencer Schwellenbach (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will counter for the Braves. In two starts, the 24-year-old right-hander has allowed only three hits and one walk with 14 strikeouts in 14 innings. He features a six-pitch mix, with his four-seam fastball averaging 96.7 mph, and a sinker and slider that will test the Phillies' ability to not chase out of the zone.
