The Philadelphia Phillies swung a big trade when they acquired second baseman Luis Arraez. His acquisition was not only perhaps the best bat on the trade market, but also required an overall shakeup of the lineup. Arraez's bat is uniquely valuable to Philadelphia, and his personality should vibe well with a clubhouse that's needed a boost after their recent skid. Phillies' closer Jhoan Duran previously had a relationship with Arraez and has been friends with him since their time in Minnesota. When the two met at the All-Star game, Duran did his best to plant that seed of becoming teammates once again.
Duran and Arraez were teammates once again for the National League at this year's All-Star Game in Philadelphia. It was the first time they'd been together since 2022 for the Minnesota Twins. Duran, with some friendly banter, told him to come to Philadelphia, per Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic.
“I want to be here, but I’m in San Francisco now,” Arraez replied, according to Duran.
“Well, you never know,” Duran replied.

Was the ask of Duran to Arraez really going to make or break president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski's mind about the deal? Probably not. But what it does do is prove that the front office is adding the right guys to this group with only weeks before the postseason commences. Adding new pieces is always great, but new pieces that bring positive culture to the clubhouse are even better.
The timing couldn't have been better. Arraez was on nobody's radar in Philadelphia coming into the season. He's been playing out in a barren wasteland in San Francisco and was unsigned all winter, and it would be fair for fans to forget just how impactful he can be in a postseason-ready lineup. Duran got to see Arraez and be reminded just how good he is during the All-Star Game, and maybe the rest of the city noticed, too. Duran took it a step further and did his best to encourage the star to come with him while taking in the spectacle of Citizens Bank Park.
Whatever Duran did, it worked. Now both All-Stars are on the same team, both vying for a valuable playoff spot. It's a lot for any player to take on a new city and environment in just a matter of days. Luckily for Arraez, he at least has some players to gravitate towards and a fanbase that looks forward to embracing him the rest of the year.
