MLB Playoff Picture proves streaking Phillies aiming higher than NL Wild Card race

Something happened to the 2026 Philadelphia Phillies when they emerged from that Iowa cornfield earlier this month, because the team that left the Field of Dreams has begun to give hope to Phillies fans once again after a muggy month of play post-All-Star break.

There is no denying that the Phils had a rough go of it from the end of July until the Field of Dreams game on Aug. 13th, but it seems as though the Phillies are hitting their late-season stride at just the right time.

The most crucial month of play is still ahead of them, but while the San Diego Padres are still vying for that last Wild Card spot against their division rival, the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Phillies are no longer part of that conversation for now. Instead, they sit two games up on both teams in the NL West and two games behind the Chicago Cubs for the No. 1 Wild Card spot.

Riding an ongoing nine-game win streak into a cross-country road trip where the Phillies look to take on a struggling Seattle Mariners club, there's potential that this streak reaches double digits ... and the Phils start to look beyond the Wild Card picture.

A red-hot Phillies team could finally topple Atlanta in the standings to claim their third division title

Why stop at the Wild Card, though? The only argument to stand on would be that the Phillies seem to play worse after some league-appointed time off, but they are currently fighting for the top spot in the division against the Atlanta Braves, who are just three games ahead of them. That would (likely) give them the NL's third seed and a home matchup with WC3 come playoff time.

Wouldn't another division-clinching, cream-colored flag look so good rustling in the wind above Ashburn Alley, especially after a hard fight to the finish to claim that well-deserved flag? Since the Luis Arraez acquisition, this team has just seemed to hum, and with no bye week to throw the team's rhythm off, it has all the ingredients for a successful, deep playoff run - that is, if this well-oiled machine can continue to run for another two months.

If you take a look at both the Phillies' and Braves' last month of regular-season play, the schedule plays to the Phillies' favor, for sure. After this three-game set against Seattle, the Phillies will move down the West Coast to play three against the Los Angeles Angels, and conclude the tour with a crucial three-game set against the Diamondbacks, who also have a definitive shot at that last Wild Card spot, all before meeting the Braves back at Citizens Bank Park for four games, after a day of rest from the road trip.

The Braves won't be as lucky, as they look to face the Dodgers after just dropping two of their last three to the Milwaukee Brewers, and will also play scrappy Rockies and Nationals ball clubs before facing the Phillies at the beginning of September (they're also facing the Giants in that stretch, but we don't talk about them in 2026). If the Phils can stay hot and the Braves revert to how they were playing through the majority of the season after a blistering start, then there's a chance that another division-clinching flag won't be just another fantasy.
