The 2026 World Baseball Classic is only just beginning, but has given us some impactful and exciting moments across the sport in just a few days. The Philadelphia Phillies have two of their biggest sluggers, Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, playing for Team U.S.A., and it's led to some spark in the first round of the WBC. Schwarber's massive home run against Team Great Britain helped drive Team U.S.A. to a decisive second consecutive win on Saturday night.

The 427-foot home run Schwarber hit off former Houston Astros' reliever Andre Scrubb broke the tie in the fifth inning and kickstarted a 9-1 rout. Schwarber finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and a walk. He's also currently rocking a 1.511 OPS through two games. Schwarber was the punch the club needed, and put the United States in a good position with only two games left to go in the round robin pool round before the quarterfinal.

Phillies' starter Cristopher Sánchez is also competing in the tournament and is the ace for the Dominican Republic. Sánchez was looking to start off strong but was pulled after only 1 1/3 innings. He allowed six hits, three earned runs, and one walk while striking out four batters. He threw 43 pitches, 32 of which were strikes. Sánchez did achieve the rare four strikeouts in the first inning, but just couldn't seem to miss the bats after that. The D.R. still won against Nicaragua, but Sánchez would love another try to set the record straight.

Kyle Schwarber and Cristopher Sánchez must lean on clutch Phillies legacies

Schwarber and Sánchez have both shown up in moments for the Phillies for both the regular season and the postseason. They're both superstars at their respective positions. Last season, Schwarber finished runner-up to the NL MVP after a 56-home run campaign, while Sánchez finished runner-up to the NL Cy Young Award after posting an 8.0 bWAR, the best among all starting pitchers.

Sánchez will surely get another start in the tournament, but will have to wait to turn around what took place on Friday. When it comes to Schwarber and his ability to change a ballgame, he couldn't have chosen a better time to start heating up.

Both players, in a sense, are still in spring training when it comes to ramping up for the regular season. Playing high-stress and competitive baseball in early March for only two weeks is not normal and is a roller coaster to go through for any MLB player. Sánchez hasn't had the moment quite like what Schwarber had yet, but will still get another chance to turn around his luck later in the tournament. For now, Phillies fans can at least enjoy the firepower the United States lineup is providing thanks to Schwarber.
