Kyle Schwarber just tied a Phillies record that put Don Mattingly in his sights

The Phillies' Designated Hitter's next goal: tying an MLB record set by...his new manager?

Boston Red Sox fans around the country bemoaned when a former fan favorite, Kyle from Watham, mashed a home run in his first at-bat in the Philadelphia Phillies' first game at historic Fenway Park this week, especially because several in attendance hoped Kyle Schwarber would return to Boston in free agency.

The Schwarbarian, however, decided to stay home after signing his five-year deal with the Phillies this past offseason. Since the beginning of the 2026 campaign, he has done nothing but deliver and show exactly why he deserved the $150 million payday agreed upon this past December.

The 92 mile per hour fast ball down and inside to the lefty masher was right in his sweet spot, and from the minute he connected with the ball, there wasn't a doubt in anyone's mind that it was about to sail over the bullpens into the right field bleachers.

This home run, Schwarber's fifth in five games, was historic for the Phillies' designated hitter, as he's now tied the franchise record for home runs hit in consecutive games. As the team's left fielder, Brandon Marsh, put it while talking to Paul Casella of MLB, "It's like, ‘Oh, another one. And another one.’ It's special.”

Schwarber's hot streak at the plate continues with his sights set on MLB history

Schwarber's blast in the first inning, along with a Bryson Stott double, were the difference makers last night in the 2-1 win over the Red Sox, and with five home runs in the books, the slugger could keep mashing his way to MLB History very soon.

The record of consecutive games with a home run hit is eight, which has only happened three times in all of MLB history: Dale Long (Pirates, 1956), Ken Griffey Jr. (Mariners, 1993), and none other than interim manager Don Mattingly, who managed to hit eight homers in consecutive contests for the New York Yankees in 1987.

Mattingly, whose streak started before the All-Star Game, then continued after the Midsummer Classic that fateful 1987 summer, is now the Phillies' interim skipper and had some thoughts on his moment in MLB history, as well as his 33-year-old designated hitter.

“I wasn't anything like Schwarbs. I really wasn't a home run hitter, but for that little stretch I was,” Mattingly said. He then went on to discuss how dangerous Schwarber is at the plate, yet mentioned nothing of his 900th managerial win, which also came with the victory Tuesday night.

While there are several Phillies who have hit home runs in five consecutive games, with Trea Turner being the last one to do so in 2023, there's a very good chance that we, the fans, might see Schwarber officially make franchise history as he sets his sights on his sixth consecutive homer at 6:45 against Sonny Gray and the Red Sox.
