It's probably good news Phillies aren't a rumored trade suitor for Tarik Skubal

Maybe it's for the best for the Phillies' future.

Detroit Tigers' left-handed star Tarik Skubal is widely considered as one of the best pitchers in all of Major League Baseball. With the Tigers' downfall comes the rise of Skubal's trade market ahead of the Aug. 3 deadline. The Philadelphia Phillies have built their way back up into playoff contention and expect to be buyers once again this season. Skubal would be a franchise-altering piece if dealt to Philadelphia, but the rumblings around a potential trade haven't exactly been plentiful.

That's probably for the best, since Dave Dombrowski has plenty of other areas to focus on when it comes to upgrading this roster.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Skubal's market is narrowing to four teams if he is in fact traded. He named the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, and San Diego Padres. The Phillies could get involved if they really wanted to, given their championship pedigree, but it won't benefit them as much with how stellar their rotation has been. Jon Heyman loosely mentioned them as a possible destination, but that felt more like obvious connecting-the-dots with a big name and a big team more than anything.

The Phillies have other trade needs to fill beyond their starting rotation

After a very shaky beginning to the 2026 regular season, the Phillies have been a dominant starting staff. The ace of the season has been Cristopher Sánchez, who owns a league-best 1.47 ERA, a 6-2 record, and 95 strikeouts across 79 1/3 innings. He also has an active 44 2/3 scoreless innings streak, a new Phillies franchise record.

The rest of the rotation has followed Sánchez's lead, with Zack Wheeler posting a 1.67 ERA in six starts. Jesús Luzardo, Aaron Nola, and Andrew Painter stumbled out of the gate but have since turned a corner. The starting staff finished with a 3.00 ERA in May, good for third-best in MLB.

What the Phillies should be focusing on is their offense. It was a massive concern last offseason, and it's only gotten louder. As a club, they rank 29th with a .224 batting average and 28th in OPS (.673). They are also only averaging 3.90 runs per game, which ranks 28th in the league. They have the big guys at the top of the lineup producing, like Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper, but have seen the rest of the lineup struggle massively at times. It was also one of the driving factors that drove Rob Thomson's firing.

The Phillies, along with any other MLB club, would be lucky to bring Tarik Skubal into their rotation. The Phillies would have the best rotation in baseball without question, but it isn't worth unloading a substantial prospect load for only a guaranteed half-season, especially when that hypothetical staff wouldn't be getting the appropriate run support.

If the Phillies should invest in anything, it should be a middle-of-the-order bat to help propel the offense back into juggernaut status.
