Philadelphia sports fans aren’t accustomed to good things happening, and the Phillies have a long track record of draft day disappointments. Names like Cornelius Randolph, Adam Haseley and Mickey Moniak are the stuff of nightmares as first-round picks who never panned out. However, the Phils have drafted surprisingly well in recent years, and last year’s first-rounder Gage Wood has started off his minor league season on the perfect note.

The Phillies have had a lot of success in the first round of recent drafts, as Alec Bohm and Bryson Stott are current major league contributors, Mick Abel and Andrew Painter became topflight pitching prospects, and Dante Nori took over this winter’s World Baseball Classic. The most recent addition to that group was fireballing right-hander Gage Wood, who the club selected 26th overall last June.

The University of Arkansas product set the college baseball world ablaze when he tossed a 19-strikeout no-hitter, and has a truly elite fastball. He’s dealt with some injury issues, and there are concerns as to whether or not he’ll be able to stick as a starter long-term due to his diminutive frame. However, Wood is doing everything he can to silence any doubts about his future.

The 22-year-old blew the doors off his opponents in his most recent outing for the Low-A Clearwater Threshers, punching out eight batters in only 3 ⅓ innings of work. Wood surrendered only one run on two hits and a walk, and racked up 16 swings and misses, showcasing true ace upside.

Gage Wood's latest start should have Phillies fans salivating (but 1 hurdle remains)

While Gage Wood is making good on his promise so far, the big hurdle he’ll need to clear on his ascent to the big leagues is durability. Wood was limited to just 108 innings over 55 games (13 starts) in college, and has just three career minor league appearances under his belt thus far. However, more than one path exists for him to become an impact player for the big club.

The Phillies have the luxury of taking Wood in one of two directions: starter or reliever. He’s probably ready for a major league bullpen right now, or at the very least will be soon. As we all know though, starting pitching is much more valuable than relief pitching, and the team will most likely do everything in their power to help Wood stick as a starter. It may take a bit longer, but if he can become an impact arm in the Phillies’ rotation in the next few years, it’ll all be worth it.
