The Philadelphia Phillies are in a good spot heading into the All-Star break, having clawed back from a tragic 9-19 start to finish off the unofficial first half at 54-43. One of the biggest issues the team will need to rectify heading into the stretch run is a porous bullpen. Many fans want to see reinforcements come from a trade deadline deal, but could one savior be a lot closer than anyone thinks? Prospect Gage Wood’s comments after the Futures Game have fans hoping he'll be a big piece for the Phillies sooner rather than later.

Gage Wood put himself on the map with an incredible 19-strikeout no-hitter during the 2025 College World Series, and the Phillies scooped up the Arkansas Razorback in the first round of that year’s draft. There were questions as to whether or not the diminutive right-hander could handle a starter’s workload, but the Phillies have had success thus far developing him in the rotation. In 16 starts split evenly between High-A and Double-A this year, the 22-year-old has fired 55 innings of 3.44 ERA ball with an incredible 79 strikeouts.

Considering the downfall of former top prospect Andrew Painter and veteran Aaron Nola’s current status as a punching bag, the Phils could certainly use Wood’s help in the major league rotation. However, it would be asking a lot to plunge a kid just one year into his pro career headfirst into a major league rotation with just 17 minor league contests to his name. Also, despite the fact that he’s being developed as a starter, he’s averaging less than four innings per outing; nowhere close to a major league workload.

Whether it's in the bullpen or the rotation, Gage Wood might be the biggest addition the Phillies could make

In spite of that, Wood may still have the big leagues in his sights this season. The Phillies have seen offseason addition Brad Keller struggle through an injury, while each of their left-handed options have failed to get hitters out with regularity. Wood may throw with his right hand, but his electric fastball and hammer curveball could make him a lethal weapon in one-inning appearances.

Promoting Gage Wood to serve as a high-leverage reliever would be a risky move, but it could pay off in spades. Using him to shore up the bullpen would allow Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski to use his scant prospect capital to improve other areas of the roster.

For what it’s worth, Wood seems eager to take on the major leagues, and he got a small taste of that in Sunday’s Futures Game. The annual contest features the brightest prospects from around the sport competing against each other as Major League Baseball ramps up All-Star festivities. This year’s contest took place at Citizens Bank Park, the very stadium Gage Wood could be pitching in for the Phillies in just a few weeks’ time.

Wood was given the honor of starting the Futures Game for the National League side, and he surrendered one run in a single inning of work. Reporters crowded around him after the contest and he was asked how much of a glimpse into his future it was pitching in his prospective home ballpark.

“You come to this place and it makes you not want to go back,” Wood answered. He shares that dream with every fan who wants to see the first-rounder, and the Phillies, succeed.

Whether it’s in the bullpen this fall or the starting rotation next year, Phillies fans, just like Gage Wood, would love to see him come up to the big leagues and never look back.
