Friday's Phillies hero may sum up team's season better than any other player

The Philadelphia Phillies have been as hot as ever in August. Entering play on Sept. 1, they have won 14 of their last 16 games and own a 21-7 record this month. Despite the fact that the club is rolling right now, it hasn't always been easy. Friday's series opener against the Los Angeles Angels was a perfect example.

Down to their final out and trailing 3-1 in the top of the ninth, Edmundo Sosa delivered big with his first career grand slam - in a pinch-hit situation, no less - to set up the 5-3 victory. It was a moment that exemplified the Phillies season delivered by the player who has, in a way, personified the 2026 campaign.

Sosa has drawn the ire of Phillies fans for much of the year. After posting wRC+ marks of 100 and 110 in 2024 and 2025, respectively, he's taken a large step back this season with an 80 wRC+ this year. When the 30-year-old utility man was getting regular reps in left field, a place where power is key, it was a reflection of Dave Dombrowski's offseason failures.

The parallels between Sosa and Philadelphia as a whole this season go deeper than that. As the club stumbled out of the gate, so did Sosa. He posted an okay wRC+ of 93 in the season's first month, and then cratered in May with a mark of 33. When the Phillies' progress under Don Mattingly seemed to unravel in July, Sosa recorded a brutal -7 wRC+.

Now, as the team is streaking in August, the Panamanian native is tearing the cover off the ball with a face-melting 255 wRC+ on the month. It's uncanny, really. In the series finale, Sosa came up big again with another go-ahead homer because, of course, he did.

Philadelphia has its eyes on a World Series title this season, and for all the heart palpitations the fan base has suffered at the team's hands in 2026, they're actually well positioned to achieve their goal. Sosa is a big reason why

Sosa is slashing .385/.393/.769 in high-leverage situations this season. That's good for an incredible 1.162 OPS and dwarfs what he does in all other situations.

As a team, the Phillies are slashing .279/.368/.480 in high-leverage thus far in 2026. That's good for a league-leading .848 OPS. Beyond it being somewhat spooky how in tune Sosa's performance is with the team overall, that's the kind of stuff that makes big things happen.

In order to win, you need to have performers up and down your roster who consistently come through in the clutch. The Phillies have that, and it will certainly help during the postseason. Now, in order for that clutch performance to matter, you have to at least perform consistently enough when the game isn't on the line to give yourself these kinds of opportunities.

That's what we'll need to see down the stretch. If that happens, we could be in for a magical Phillies season, and it shouldn't be a shock if Sosa is a big reason why.
