Former GM continues banging the drum for veteran third baseman's fit with Phillies

Here we go again. Would this star third baseman really be an ideal fit with the Phillies?

The Philadelphia Phillies have had an eventful offseason so far in addressing their needs for the upcoming 2025 season. They have signed Jordan Romano and Joe Ross to help bolster their bullpen. The Phillies have also recruited Max Kepler to hopefully solve their outfield offensive issues. Then their biggest move came with the acquisition of promising young starter Jesús Luzardo from the Miami Marlins to significantly upgrade their starting rotation.

However, the Phillies may still be missing out on an ideal fit for their infield; at least, former MLB general manager Jim Bowden appears to think so. In one of his recent pieces for The Athletic, in which he made some predictions on where the top 15 remaining free agents will sign, Bowden says that veteran third baseman Alex Bregman would have been a great fit with the Phillies (subscription required), especially with their ballpark.

Jim Bowden still thinks Alex Bregman is a fit with the Phillies

There’s no question that Bregman could be a huge difference-maker for Philadelphia. After all, all the 30-year-old star has done in his career so far is become an All-Star twice, along with capturing Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Awards while finishing runner-up for the AL MVP Award in 2019. More importantly, Bregman has shown to be a winner as he led the Houston Astros to four World Series appearances over his nine-year MLB career, while winning it all twice.

As a career .272 hitter with an .848 OPS, Bregman has the ability to average close to 100 runs scored, 30 home runs and 100 RBI over a full 162-game schedule each season. With that kind of elite run production, he would instantly boost the offensive potential of the Phillies to unimaginable levels, since they are already among the best in the league. More importantly, despite a small sample size, Bregman sports a career .444 batting average and 1.363 OPS hitting at Citizens Bank Park, which is his second-highest mark recorded for any ballpark in the league. So bringing him to the Phillies to play there on a regular basis could ultimately unleash the beast.

However, as Bowden wittingly pointed out, for it to work, Philadelphia really needs to trade Alec Bohm first. Unfortunately, they have come up short in that department despite several attempts over the past couple of months. As a result, Bowden predicted that the Boston Red Sox would be the final winners in the Bregman sweepstakes this winter.

Nevertheless, with still a few weeks left before spring training, the Phillies still have the time to make it happen if they really want to win. But first things first, unless they are finally successful in moving Bohm, this potential dream move of signing Bregman would likely remain only a fantasy instead of becoming a reality.
