The Field of Dreams game for MLB will be back this Thursday after a long four-year layoff. The Philadelphia Phillies will be taking on the Minnesota Twins under the lights in Dyersville, IA, at 7:30 PM ET on Netflix. It's a highly anticipated event feeding off the nostalgia of the 1989 film featuring Kevin Costner. The Phillies will be on national television once again, but with a slight damper of right-hander Aaron Nola being the one to toe the rubber that night.
If the rest of MLB has learned anything about the Phillies playoff makeup, it's that the starting pitching drives the engine of the club. Nola, on the other hand, has drifted further and further from being a trusted arm and a top guy on the staff. He'll be the one to oppose a struggling Twins lineup with their starter yet to be announced.
Phillies will hope for the best from Aaron Nola in front of a national audience in Field of Dreams game
Whether the Phillies win or lose this showcase event, it still counts as just one game. That said, Phillies fans still won't enjoy holding their breath longer every time Nola delivers a pitch. In 24 starts this season, Nola has put up a 5.47 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, and 129 strikeouts in 125 innings. He's sporting a 4.28 ERA over his last seven starts dating back to July 5, which means there was a time when these numbers were even worse. Nola also leads all pitchers since 2023 in home runs allowed (109), so Phillies fans would appreciate not seeing batting practice off their starter in such a memorable and nationally televised game. Hopefully, he can carry the momentum of his recent milestone into his Thursday start.
The bright side is the Twins aren't world beaters at this point with a below .500 record on the year. They're hovering around the last Wild Card spot, but with a mediocre American League, the overall threat should be limited to the Phillies' postseason-caliber roster. Nola can shut down a lineup and has shown the ability to limit damage as of late.
The Field of Dreams game on Thursday will cap off the Phillies 14th game in 14 days. It's been a struggle trying to get everyone healthy while still mixing in days off. The club is tired and beaten up, but they just need the longest-tenured Phillie, Nola, to get them by for one night to hopefully put a ribbon on such a special occasion.
