The Philadelphia Phillies continued their offseason plans of revamping the outfield with the signing of Adolis García to a one-year, $10 million deal earlier this week. The Phillies may not have full approval from fans, as there have been mixed reactions to adding García to the 2026 roster, but the organization does have the approval of former MLB player Cameron Maybin.
Maybin spent 15 years in Major League Baseball, playing with 10 different teams, with his longest stints being four years each with the San Diego Padres and Florida Marlins.
The former major league player took to social media to discuss the Phillies’ addition of García, breaking down the move on multiple levels, which hopefully shows fans the positives behind the moves.
Cameron Maybin's positive Adolis García outlook should have fans seeing this move differently
"Phillies signing Adolis García is a smart [move] in my eyes. Elite defense in right field," Maybin begins his post.
He is exactly right, as the Phillies are bringing in an outfielder who won a Gold Glove Award in the 2023 season. García’s defense has continued to stand out, as he finished 12th last season with +1 outs above average, compared to Nick Castellanos, who finished 35th at -12. This bodes well for a defense that struggled a year ago, and fans should be excited about adding an outfielder with a strong arm, something the team has seemed to lack in recent years.
“Right handed power that absolutely plays at Citizens Bank," Maybin continues. "Short term commitment with real upside.”
It is no secret to anyone who follows baseball that Citizens Bank Park, the home of the Phillies, is a hitter-friendly ballpark compared to most stadiums. Despite struggles at the plate, García has not seen his contact velocity fall off much. He finished this past season with a 92.1 mph average exit velocity, which is tied for his career high from 2022 and 2023.
For a player with a lot of power who likes to use all parts of the field, this should benefit García overall as a hitter in the Phillies’ lineup and boost his overall statistics plus hitting with a great lineup around him.
Maybin does acknowledge García's past couple of down years.
“Yes the bat has been inconsistent and the OBP isn’t great. That’s a one year risk your willing to take. On this type of deal you’re betting on a bounce back not a decline,” he says.

Everyone knows when a veteran like this signs a one-year deal it is a "prove it" or “bounce back” type deal. That's what the Phillies are hoping for but when it balances out by upgrading the defense a lot and the power that will be there it will go a long way for the lineup. The Phillies need power and runs driven in and can sacrifice some batting average and on-base percentage for a potential player in the middle of the lineup. This is part of Maybin’s point.
Finally, Maybin talks about the state of the Phillies and what to expect.
“If he gives you at least half of what he’s been at his peak, Philly just upgraded its defense and added real thump without sacrificing the future. That’s a contender type move. Still need to address the Pen And Rotation!”
This is perfectly said, as most people are not expecting him to come in and hit 39 home runs again like he did during his 2023 All-Star season. However, he could realistically return to the 25-home run range while driving in close to 100 RBIs with the talent surrounding him. This signing could end up being a home run for the Phillies.
The Phillies were looking for a one-year deal that would not handicap their future while still adding a veteran player who brings energy to the clubhouse. It is a contender-type move that allows flexibility for additional moves this offseason or at the trade deadline if necessary.
As Maybin also points out, there's still a need to add to the rest of the roster, and this signing should not prevent any other potential offseason additions.
Yes, there are question marks, no one is hiding that. However, there should also be plenty of excitement surrounding this addition, which should have fans eager to see García’s power at Citizens Bank Park in a lineup featuring Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper.
