You never know what you're going to see on a baseball field on a given night. Even on game 158 of the season, some special things can happen at the ballpark. The Philadelphia Phillies had quite the statement win on Wednesday with an 11-1 onslaught against their division rival Miami Marlins.

The victory locked up the No. 2 seed in the NL, securing a first-round bye in the process. Their eight home runs hit also set a franchise record, led by shortstop Edmundo Sosa.

Sosa had just spent 12 days on the injured list with a groin strain (subscription required), before returning to the Phillies' lineup at shortstop. The Phillies needed him back, and in his first game, he proceeded to go 3-for-4 with three runs, three home runs and five RBIs.

It was Sosa's first three-homer game of his career and the first three-homer game ever by a Phillies shortstop. In 86 games this season, he's now hitting .278 with 10 home runs and 38 RBIs.

The Phillies used the Marlins pitching staff for batting practice and they certainly needed it after their heartbreaking extra-inning loss on Tuesday.

Of the eight home runs they hit, Kyle Schwarber went 4-for-5 with two home runs of his own. Bryson Stott hit his 13th, a solo shot in the fourth. Alec Bohm went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in the seventh, his 11th, and Otto Kemp followed that with a two-run blast which was his eighth round-tripper of the year.

As for Schwarber, his total is now up to 56 as he just keeps adding to his historic season. He's now just three home runs shy of breaking Ryan Howard's franchise record of 58 home runs hit in 2006. Schwarber also set an MLB record for the most home runs hit in a season by a left-handed hitter against a left-handed pitcher, with 23.

It's hard to imagine getting outshined with that kind of single-game performance by Schwarber, but the Phillies had quite the magic working for them up and down the lineup.

All eyes will be on Schwarber to potentially break the record, but it was in fact Sosa's night to remember. He's been an integral part of what the Phillies have been doing since he was acquired back in 2022.

He's been an exceptional utility player for them and has played up to the level needed for whatever the club has asked of him, including an excellent replacement for the injured Trea Turner. Sosa hasn't wavered and as a result put the team on his back on Wednesday and carried them to a first-round bye.
