As Philadelphia Phillies pitchers and catchers make their way to Clearwater, Florida, for the start of spring training, baseball season is officially underway. While the coaches and front office executives will begin evaluating the talent currently on the roster, it's not too early to look ahead to the MLB Draft, which is just five months away.
In the 2025 MLB Draft, the Phillies will hold the 26th pick as they look to continue to bolster their farm system for the future, which was recently ranked 11th in baseball by Keith Law of The Athletic.
Early MLB 2025 Mock Draft sees Phillies select potential 20/20 outfielder Nick Dumesnil
In a recent mock draft for Bleacher Report, Joel Reuter predicts that the Phillies will select outfielder Nick Dumesnil from California Baptist University. Dumesnil, 20, is coming off a strong 2024 spring season, during which he hit .362 with 19 home runs and 45 RBI in 61 games.
He continued to dominate the competition in the Cape Cod League, where he hit .311 with four home runs and 15 RBI in 36 games. In addition to his performance at the plate, he also showcased an innate ability to be a force on the basepaths, adding 26 steals during Cape Cod play.
Dumesnil’s skill set presents an enticing blend of speed and power which makes him a potential 20/20 player at the major league level if he can develop to his full potential, according to Reuter.
Dumesmil would be a great fit for a Phillies organization that has seen a lot of success with their farm system in recent years with players such as Alec Bohm, Bryson Stott and Orion Kerkering playing big roles as homegrown talent. The Phillies are no strangers to taking outfielders in the first round as they selected Justin Crawford in 2022 and Dante Nori in 2024, both of whom are among the team’s top prospects heading into this season.
If this prediction holds true, the Phillies will have a deep future outfield core, which is necessary given the current state of their major league depth.
As it stands, the Phillies are expected to trot out a starting outfield of Nick Castellanos, Brandon Marsh and Max Kepler on Opening Day. While Crawford, Nori and Dumesnil would not be expected to contribute right away, it gives the Phillies plenty of long-term options as they look to maximize their competitive window going forward.
It remains to be seen what the Phillies will do in the 2025 MLB Draft, but fans should keep an eye out for Nick Dumesnil, who would fit well with the team’s recent draft tendencies and long-term needs.
