The Philadelphia Phillies are just getting their second half started with a strong desire to play better and finish out the year strong while maintaining their division lead, per MLB.com's Paul Casella. It now comes with the complication of missing third baseman Alec Bohm for an extended period of time with a fractured left rib.
The injury, which originally occurred in the Phillies’ penultimate game of the first half when Bohm was hit by the San Diego Padres’ Yu Darvish, now throws another wrench into the plans for the Phillies down the stretch run with no immediate backup plan for the Phillies to navigate. It's definitely not what Phillies fans saw coming, especially just getting back star Bryce Harper after he missed nearly a month with a wrist issue.
Prior to tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, the Phillies placed INF Alec Bohm on the 10-day IL with a fractured left rib. To fill his spot on the 26-man roster, INF/OF Weston Wilson was recalled from Lehigh Valley (AAA).

Alec Bohm heads to Phillies’ injured list less than two weeks before trade deadline
The news is a blow when it comes to any starter on the team, but now the Phillies lose a middle-of-the-order bat with no timetable for his return. The coinciding roster move was to bring up utility player Weston Wilson to the 26-man roster.
Bohm, through 92 games, has batted .278 with a .715 OPS. He hasn't performed at the All-Star level he played at last year, but he has played like it since May 1, batting .304 with a .802 OPS. He has also accumulated eight home runs and 42 RBIs in 2025.
The timing is also devastating due to the trade deadline being less than two weeks away on July 31. It puts the front office in a tough position now with added pressure that they may have to alter their deadline plans. They're leaning towards not draining the farm system (subscription required), but the opinions will be hard to ignore, per Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic.
Unclear how long Bohm will be out, but at least a month seems like safe bet based on other rib fractures in MLB.

It'll be interesting to see how Phillies handle 2B/3B/LF in the meantime. Going back to strict Kepler/Wilson LF platoon seems unlikely for already scuffling offense. https://t.co/oE8TYlsVnH
A month without Bohm may not feel like a long time, but the Phillies are still missing right-hander Aaron Nola since mid-May with a fractured rib as well. The offense will have to manage too, but with questions already looming before the deadline, the lineup has an even steeper hill to climb.
According to FanGraphs, the Phillies rank 13th offensive fWAR (13.5). They also currently rank 13th in runs scored (443). The Phillies now have to rely on a combination of Edmundo Sosa and Wilson to pick up the slack. Sosa, in 50 games, has accrued a .274 batting average, a .732 OPS, with three home runs and 21 RBIs. Wilson has played in 20 games in 2025, batting .194, with a .587 OPS and one home run and four RBIs. In Triple-A, he slashed .250/.366/.404 with three homers in Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
