The Philadelphia Phillies took down the Texas Rangers on Opening Day 5-3 thanks to a dominant outing by their ace, Cristopher Sánchez. The D.R. native got the starting nod after the injury to Zack Wheeler, but make no mistake about Sánchez's ability to lead the Phillies' pitching staff. He showed out on Thursday and matched a franchise record that hadn't been touched in almost 30 years.
It was as if Sánchez never stopped his Cy Young run from 2025, in which he finished runner-up after posting a 2.50 ERA. Sánchez went six innings and allowed just three hits, no walks, and no runs. He also struck out 10 batters and earned his first win of the 2026 campaign. With his double-digit strikeouts, Sánchez became the first Phillies pitcher to do that on Opening Day since Curt Schilling in 1997.
Schilling's 11 strikeouts that year against the Los Angeles Dodgers still remain the franchise record for an Opening Day start. It's quite a feat and proves how special Sánchez was on Opening Day, adding his name yet again to the Phillies history books.

Schilling played a total of 20 seasons, nine of which were with the Phillies. He donned the red pinstripes from 1992 to 2000, with 1997 being the standout campaign. Schilling's 1997 season started off with a bang and led to his first career All-Star appearance and a fourth-place Cy Young finish. As noted by Matt Gelb of The Athletic, Sánchez now joins elite Phillies company while grabbing the league's attention after just one start.
Cristopher Sánchez's efficiency helped place him in elite Phillies Opening Day company
Sánchez was as efficient as you could get in his first start of the 2026 regular season, only allowing three baserunners in six innings. He also managed to get through on just 87 pitches, 59 of which were strikes. Per Statcast, he also posted a 29 percent whiff rate, mostly relying on his sinker, but also registered seven whiffs on 13 swings against his changeup.
There are not many in today's game that can replicate the dominance Sánchez demonstrated on Thursday. He's someone who'll be firmly in the Cy Young discussion every year. He's now in ace territory, and there's a good chance that the trajectory eventually leads to an award in his trophy case.
Of all the big starting pitchers this city has seen, it's Sánchez who now gets to lead this pitching staff. Wheeler will come back, but the future is with Sánchez. He had a stellar, history-making first start, but Sánchez's 2026 run is only getting started.
