To put it generously, it was not a banner year on defense for the Philadelphia Phillies. They ranked tied for last in team Defensive Runs Saved (-51) and finished with bottom-10 marks in Outs Above Average (-15) and Fielding Run Value (-17). They were more middle-of-the-pack in fielding percentage (.986), but it's hard to make errors when you let easy balls fall for hits in the first place.
As such, it should come as little surprise to learn that the team has no Gold Glove finalists this year. They are one of just three National League squads—alongside the Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants, both of whom finished more than 10 games below .500—without one.

There's a good case to be made that Bryson Stott deserved a nomination, as he finished the year with +8 OAA and +4 FRV. However, his candidacy was done in by an ugly grade from DRS (-9) and the fact that second base featured some of the best defensive play of any position in the Senior Circuit in 2026.
Even if you want to call him a "snub," though, it's hard to draw any other conclusion than the obvious one: The Phillies were terrible on defense this year.
Phillies' atrocious defense in 2026 was truly a team effort
Unlike a dominant starting pitcher who can take over a game à la prime Roy Halladay, there's a beautiful synergy required to be a great defensive team. The Chicago Cubs, for instance, just put up a historically great +115 DRS as a collective, and they were rewarded with five Gold Glove finalists as a result.
In the same sense, there's synergy in being a terrible outfit on that side of the ball as well. The Phillies got downright putrid contributions from all over the diamond; Trea Turner (-17 DRS) was impossibly bad at shortstop, Alec Bohm (-8 OAA) was no better at the hot corner, and Bryce Harper somehow found a way to be awful at two positions (-5 DRS in right field, -10 FRV at first base).
And that's not even half the story. Two-time Gold Glove winner J.T. Realmuto didn't live up to his standard behind the plate this year (0 FRV), while rookie Justin Crawford (-2 OAA and -2 FRV) failed to meet expectations in center field. Oh, and Duran (-5 DRS) and José Alvarado (-4 DRS) were two of the worst fielding pitchers in the league despite both being on the mound for fewer than 60 innings.
The Phillies need to get younger, more athletic, and more intelligent on the field. That might require a more thorough roster overhaul than Dave Dombrowski has in mind this winter, but if you believe in the idea that "defense wins championships," the Philly won't be sniffing a World Series anytime soon with this core.
