The Philadelphia Phillies have made a remarkable turnaround over the past two weeks, going from a team that looked dead in the water to the contending club fans had envisioned coming into the year. Just about everyone has been playing better ever since interim manager Don Mattingly took over for the beloved Rob Thomson. Everyone except for Alec Bohm, that is.
The erstwhile third baseman is quickly playing his way off the roster, and if the Phils hope to go far in October they’ll need to upgrade their black hole at the hot corner. Let’s dive into a few replacements that could go a long way towards curing that ill.
If the Phillies finally move on from Alec Bohm, these guys could be viable replacements
Eugenio Suárez
Plodding slugger Eugenio Suárez was linked to the Phillies this past winter, as the front office explored options to upgrade over Bohm. Unfortunately, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski let the 34-year-old slip right through his fingers as Suárez signed an eminently reasonable one-year, $15 million deal with the Cincinnati Reds.
Suárez has struggled through 25 games thus far, but has popped 328 career homers, including 49 last year. He’s a rough defender, but if the Reds make him available this summer he would add a true difference-making bat to a Phillies order that is desperately in need of some right-handed thump.
Yoán Moncada
Switch-hitting Yoán Moncada has never lived up to the enormous hype that followed him as the centerpiece of the Boston Red Sox’s Chris Sale trade, but has turned himself into a cromulent big leaguer. The 30-year-old Cuban has posted just a .615 OPS over his first 33 games this year, but worked to a rock solid .783 mark in an injury-shortened 2025 season.
Moncada isn’t anything special, but right now "nothing special" would be an enormous improvement over Alec Bohm’s little league-caliber production. It wouldn’t cost much for the Phillies to bring in a pending free agent like Moncada to provide some stability for a playoff run.
Jeff McNeil
Desperate times call for desperate measures, and nothing could be more desperate than bringing in a hated rival. Although no longer a New York Met, Phillie-killer Jeff McNeil has been a thorn in their side for over half a decade. The fanbase may not like rooting for him, but McNeil could be just what this team needs.
The 34-year-old has ridden a contact-heavy offensive profile to a career .284/.351/.428 slash line, and has been even better in 34 games this season, posting a .311/.375/.415 line with the Athletics. McNeil doesn’t spend much time at the hot corner, but is capable of bouncing all over the diamond and could certainly handle platoon duties there alongside Edmundo Sosa. McNeil would be the perfect addition to a Phillies offense that has a hard time manufacturing runs.
Jake Burger
The Phillies offense is not a good one, and its biggest weakness is right-handed power. Jake Burger is far from a perfect player, but his biggest strength is power from the right side. That sounds like a perfect match.
The 2017 first-round pick has been traded twice already in his career, and with the Texas Rangers staring down the barrel of another lost season, he could be headed for trade number three this summer. Burger doesn’t make much contact, but when he does he has a tendency to put the ball in the seats, having crushed 94 dingers in only 483 career games. The 30-year-old is a butcher at third base, but adding his potent stick to a flaccid Phillies lineup would be well worth it.
Nolan Arenado
Future Hall of Famer Nolan Arenado is a shell of his former self, and was dealt to the Arizona Diamondbacks this past offseason for a bag of balls and some salary relief. The 35-year-old has performed admirably in his new surroundings, rocking a .759 OPS across 33 games with the Snakes.
Despite Arenado being in the midst of a massive nine-year, $275 million contract, an acquiring team would only be on the hook for less than $10 million of that if they dealt for him in this penultimate season of that deal. If the Californian can continue to turn back the clock this summer, it might make sense for the Phillies to scoop him up from a D-Backs team that’s going nowhere.
Isaac Paredes
Houston Astros third sacker Isaac Paredes is the one true star that could be available for needy teams this summer, as injuries and old age have torpedoed the once-dynastic club’s year. The 27-year-old is controllable through next season, and has put up an excellent .238/.338/.427 line for his career.
Paredes has been his usual self in 2026, posting a .265/.363/.393 line over 33 games for a floundering Astros club, and would reel in a haul if they decide to tear things down. The Phillies don’t have too much prospect capital to deal from, but their championship window is already nearing a close and pushing some more chips in on Paredes could extend that just a bit longer.
Nolan Gorman
2018 first-round pick Nolan Gorman has never quite put it together with the St. Louis Cardinals, as he’s shown flashes of brilliance over his five big league seasons, but has never settled into a prolonged stretch of elite play. The 25-year-old is up to his usual tricks this season, providing solid pop with four doubles and five homers, but not doing much else in 35 games.
The rebuilding Redbirds have no need to rush a trade for the former top prospect, as he’s controllable via arbitration through the 2028 season, but may prefer to move on from him in order to take a look at younger players. They probably won’t let Gorman go for nothing, but the Phillies could try to pry him loose for pennies on the dollar and hope that he fulfills the promise he showed as a youngster.
