There are a lot of free agents still on the market, including these former Phillies who haven’t found a home for 2025 with spring training looming.

Earlier in January, we took a look at five former Philadelphia Phillies players who did not have a contract secured ahead of the 2025 MLB season. Of those five former Phillies, three of them have since found a home. Reliever Jeff Hoffman joined the Toronto Blue Jays, outfielder Austin Hays landed with the Cincinnati Reds and closer Carlos Estévez signed with the Kansas City Royals. For both Héctor Neris and Whit Merrifield, though, the search continues, for now.

However, in addition to Neris and Merrifield, there are still many others in free agency who haven’t been as lucky and are actually still without a job ahead of the 2025 season, with spring training looming around the corner. Let’s take a look at six other notable former Phillies players who are hoping to secure a deal before the regular season commences.

Nick Pivetta

Almost a decade ago, at the 2015 trade deadline, Nick Pivetta found himself becoming an integral part of the Phillies organization when he came over in the trade with the Washington Nationals for disgruntled closer Jonathan Papelbon. Through further growth and development in their system, Pivetta went on to become a mainstay in the Phillies’ rotation starting in 2017. However, he had limited success in his tenure with Philadelphia as he posted a 19-30 record while registering an ERA greater than 5.00 and WHIP above 1.50 in three of the four seasons with the club.

However, after leaving Philadelphia to join the Boston Red Sox as a result of a trade during the 2020 COVID-shortened season, Pivetta gradually turned things around. In doing so, he had finally established a solid MLB career in the process. With the Red Sox, he has compiled a 37-41 record with a respectable 4.29 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, along with 718 strikeouts in just 633 innings pitched. On top of that, Pivetta is coming off a solid 2024 campaign in which he posted a 4.14 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, together with 36 walks and a whopping 172 strikeouts in just 145 2/3 innings of work over 27 appearances.

At just the ripe age of 31 and having put up impressive numbers in each of the past few seasons, Pivetta will be a perfect middle to back-end of the rotation add for any potential contending team this offseason. Therefore, even though he may not have a job as of yet, there’s no doubt he won’t be unemployed for long, as it could happen any day now.
