Phillies extend contract of President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski

After an overwhelmingly successful 2022 season, the Philadelphia Phillies have extended President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski’s contract. The extension will keep the World Series-winning executive in charge of the Phillies organization through at least the 2027 season.

The move would indicate that Phillies Managing Partner John Middleton and ownership believe in Dombrowski’s vision for the club and his ability to bring in talent to help the team succeed.

Middleton spoke highly of Dombrowski after the extension announcement was made:

“We are extremely pleased that Dave has agreed to continue to lead our baseball operations department through the 2027 season. His astute knowledge of the game and keen eye for talent set us on a path to win the National League pennant. I firmly believe that under his stewardship, we will reach our ultimate goal.”

Since Dombrowski was hired in December 2020, he has revamped the Phillies’ player development system through the notable hire of Preston Mattingly as Director of Player Development. Under Mattingly, the Phillies have begun to develop highly touted prospects, such as Andrew Painter, Mick Abel, and Johan Rojas. It is expected that some of these players can contribute to the big-league club as early as next season.

Dombrowski brought in multiple key pieces for the team’s 2022 National League Championship run — including Kyle Schwarber, José Alvarado, and Nick Castellanos. He also re-signed catcher J.T. Realmuto to a five-year deal last offseason.

The newly extended President of Baseball Operations is tasked with continuing to improve the club this offseason. Both Middleton and Dombrowski have made it clear that they are willing to spend and bring in outside talent — especially in the loaded shortstop market this offseason.

It will be interesting to see which signings and trades are made before spring training in February. One thing is for sure, though — Dombrowski will be aggressive in improving the roster and he has the full support of ownership, as they are hungry to surpass the success of the 2022 Phillies and win it all.
