Track the Philadelphia Phillies 2022 draft picks

On Sunday evening, the Philadelphia Phillies and the rest of Major League Baseball will begin making their selections in the 2022 draft. The draft will go on from July 17-19, with Day 1 covering the first two rounds, totaling 80 selections.

We’ll be updating this post throughout the draft, but first, here’s everything you need to know:

Which picks do the Philadelphia Phillies have in the 2022 MLB draft?

The Phillies have four picks in this year’s draft:

Round 1:  Pick 17

Round 3: Pick 93

Round 4: Pick 122

Round 5: Pick 152

Why don’t the Philadelphia Phillies have a second-round pick?

The Phillies forfeited their second-round pick by signing Nick Castellanos, who was extended a qualifying offer by the Cincinnati Reds.

This is the second time in the last three drafts that the Phillies do not have a second-round pick. Signing Zack Wheeler was definitely worth sacrificing that pick.

Philadelphia Phillies first-round pick: Justin Crawford, Bishop Gorman High School

With the 17th overall pick in the draft, the Phillies selected 18-year-old outfielder Justin Crawford. This is their third consecutive year drafting a player out of high school as their first-round pick, following Mick Abel and Andrew Painter.

Not only is he the cousin of former Phillies infielder and Jean Segura trade piece J.P. Crawford, but Justin Crawford is also one of a few draftees in this year’s class whose fathers played in the majors. He’s the son of Carl Crawford, who had a 15-year career with the Tampa Bay then-Devil Rays, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a four-time All-Star, won a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger, and led the American League in stolen bases four times in five seasons between 2003-07.

Unsurprisingly, the Phillies’ newest draft pick’s scouting report notes his “near-elite speed.”

Crawford committed to LSU, but is expected to sign with the Phillies instead. He attended Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, the alma mater of current Yankees outfielder Joey Gallo.

Philadelphia Phillies third-round pick: Gabriel Rincones, Florida Atlantic University

With the 93rd overall pick, the Phillies selected their second outfielder of the draft, Gabriel Rincones.

The San Diego Padres selected Rincones in the 19th round of last year’s draft, but he opted to continue his education at FAU, instead, where he was named Conference USA Newcomer of the Year 2022. Before that, he played college ball at St. Petersburg College, a junior college program also in Florida.  According to Baseball Prospect Journal, while playing in at St. Petersburg, he walked more than he struck out.

During his college career, Rincones showed scouts that he can hit for both average and power.

Philadelphia Phillies fourth-round pick: Alex McFarlane, University of Miami Hurricanes

The 122nd-overall pick in the 2022 draft is Alex McFarlane, a RHP out of the University of Miami.

According to Baseball America (subscription required), McFarlane’s fastball can touch 99 mph, and he has “an above-average slider.”
