The Philadelphia Phillies have called up Darick Hall

The Philadelphia Phillies are making another change to the roster.

On Wednesday afternoon, they announced that they’ve called up Darick Hall from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He will make his big-league debut on Wednesday evening, batting fourth in the lineup as the designated hitter.

Here’s everything you need to know about the newest Phillie:

2016 Draft pick

The Phillies selected Hall in the 14th round of the June Amateur Draft out of Dallas Baptist University. The Phillies have selected eight players from Dallas Baptist in their draft history – including David Martinelli in the sixth round of 2016 – but leaguewide, only 20 players who attended the school reached the majors; Hall will be the 21st.

Hall will also be the fourth player from the Phillies’ 2016 draft selections to make his debut, joining Mickey Moniak (first overall), Cole Irvin (fifth round), and JoJo Romero (

Hall was raking in Triple-A

Over 72 games at Triple-A this season, Hall more than earned his call-up. He hit .269/.346/.548 with a .894 OPS, 29% strikeout rate, and 9.5% walk rate. His 75 hits included 18 doubles and 20 home runs, 47 runs scored, and 67 RBI. He’s also 5-for-6 in stolen-base attempts.

Not just good at baseball

According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, when the 2020 minor league season got canceled due to the pandemic and Hall wasn’t invited to camp, he spent the summer in Arizona, competing in bass fishing tournaments. He even won $944 in one contest, which is great, because minor leaguers don’t make a lot of money.

Hall’s debut is a first for Phillies in almost a century

Gelb also reports that Hall is the first Phillies player to debut in the cleanup spot since LeGrant Scott in 1939. That year, the Phillies were in their first full season of renting Shibe Park from the Philadelphia Athletics, and they finished last in the National League with a 45-106 record.

Hall will wear #25

For the second day in a row, the Phillies are giving out a franchise legend’s number to a new player. Óscar Mercado will wear Cole Hamels’ #35, and Hall will wear Jim Thome’s #25.
