The Philadelphia Phillies Opening Day 2022 roster has a few surprise names

The Philadelphia Phillies finally released their Opening Day roster late Tuesday afternoon, though since they don’t play their first game until Friday, they actually had more time than most teams, who will open their seasons on Thursday.

And even though there were plenty of players who were locks to make the roster, there were also a fair number who weren’t.

Here are five surprises on the roster:

1. Alec Bohm

The Phillies want to have their cake and eat it too, so they put Alec Bohm and Bryson Stott on the roster. Stott clearly outperformed Bohm throughout spring training, and yet here they both are.

Despite the fact that Stott’s spring numbers were practically double Bohm’s, the Phillies want the latter to be up at the big leagues, presumably, so he can work with hitting coach Kevin Long and infield coach Bobby Dickerson.

Fine, start Stott and bench Bohm. The alliteration is almost as perfect as the game plan.
