The Phillies’ record in the past decade has not been ideal.

The Philadelphia Phillies have not strung together some of their better seasons in franchise history as of late.

In fact, by recently missing the postseason for the 10th straight year, they have the longest drought in the National League and the second-longest in Major League Baseball.

Despite the team securing its first season with a record above .500, fans surely would rather see a return to meaningful postseason baseball, even if it means an early exit in the Wild Card or National League Division Series.

Twitter user @TheGameDayMLB recently shared a graphic that shows just how disappointing Phillies baseball has been — since their 2009 World Series defeat to the New York Yankees, in particular. Dating back to 2010, the organization has posted a combined 897-945 record, 73.5 games behind the Washington Nationals (970-871) and 70 games behind the Atlanta Braves (966-874) in the National League East.

Coincidentally, the New York Mets have just one fewer win than the Phillies over this stretch, whereas the last-place Miami Marlins are just one of two teams in Major League Baseball to record more than 1,000 losses.

Just imagine how much worse this graphic would look for Phillies baseball, had it started at the 2012 season. The 2010 Phillies impressed with 97 wins, followed by the franchise-best 102-win season in 2011. Since then, the Phillies have recorded the following wins per season:

  • 2012: 81 wins
  • 2013: 73 wins
  • 2014: 73 wins
  • 2015: 63 wins
  • 2016: 71 wins
  • 2017: 66 wins
  • 2018: 80 wins
  • 2019: 81 wins
  • 2020: 28 wins (60-game season)
  • 2021: 82 wins

Looking at the above graphic, some surprises include the Oakland Athletics leading the American League West at 961 wins. It is also notable that the New York Yankees recorded more than 1,000 wins since 2010, yet have not won a World Series championship.

The Phillies have been much better the past four seasons than their 2013 through 2017-season stretch, so there is optimism that 2022 could finally be the year when things improve.
