After winning Tuesday night’s game on a 10th-inning walk-off triple by J.T. Realmuto, the Phillies were able to overcome the Orioles. It really shouldn’t have been that difficult; going to extras against the only AL team with 100+ wins is quite embarrassing.

The series wraps up tonight and then the Phillies will spend the weekend with their fellow Pennsylvania team, the Pirates, before their crucial three-game set against the Braves next week. Every win counts, but with Zack Wheeler on the mound tonight, this one should be a cakewalk.

Phillies Pitcher Today: Zack Wheeler

Hauling out your ace to destroy one of the only two teams that’s already lost over 100 games feels mean, but that’s the way the rotation cookie crumbles. Zack Wheeler will go for the Phillies in this series finale against Keegan Akin, who made his big-league debut in August 2020.

Wheeler leads all of MLB with 200 1/3 innings pitched (his first 200+ inning season) and leads the NL with 231 strikeouts, also a new career-high; he was the first pitcher in the game to reach 200 in both categories. He also has a career-best 2.83 ERA over 30 games.

So far in September, Wheeler has returned to form after a rough August in which he allowed four or more earned runs in five of six starts. In three starts so far this month, he has a 1.02 ERA over 17 2/3 innings with 23 strikeouts, three walks, and only two earned runs allowed. More of that please!

The Phillies righty has pitched against the Orioles thrice in his career and has a 2.04 ERA against them across 17 2/3 innings, while they’re hitting .242/.315/.303 with a .618 OPS against him.

The 26-year-old Akin has a 6.93 ERA over 23 games (16 starts) this season. He’s allowed 69 earned runs, including 17 homers, over 89 2/3 innings, issued 39 walks and only struck out 76 batters. He’s never faced the Phillies but does have a 3.86 ERA in four interleague games.
