Phillies Game Today: Phillies vs Mets Lineup, Odds, Prediction, Pick, Pitcher, TV Channel for September 17
The Philadelphia Phillies head to Queens riding high on a 17-run win over the Cubs.
This wouldn’t seem so impressive, given the Cubs’ record this season, but considering the Phillies have struggled to beat under-.500 teams, taking two of three from them this week was a coup.
The New York Mets, who were such stiff competition for the Phillies over the summer, have sunk to 72-75. The division was theirs to lose, and they’ve lost it, now 5 1/2 games out of first.
With the Atlanta Braves facing the already-postseason-bound San Francisco Giants over the weekend, this is the perfect time for the Phillies to make up ground. This weekend could be make-or-break for them.

Phillies Pitcher Today: Zack Wheeler
After a bullpen game, the most comforting sight is Zack Wheeler taking the mound. His Cy Young chances might be over, but he’s still leading all of MLB in innings pitched and strikeouts.
The Phillies ace is currently tied with his single-season high of 195 1/3 innings pitched, and tonight could likely be the night he reaches 200 innings for the first time in his career. That it could come against his former team makes it even sweeter.
Wheeler has a 2.86 ERA over 29 starts this season, including three complete games and two shutouts, both MLB-leading metrics as well. This will be his fifth game against the Mets, whom he has a 2.15 ERA against. He’s struck out 31 of their batters over 29 1/3 innings, and only issued five walks, and allowed seven earned runs.
This will be Wheeler’s 64th career game at Citi Field, and he has a 4.08 ERA there over 379 innings. But he’s a different pitcher than he was when he wore orange and blue; he has a 2.03 ERA over two starts there this season. He’s also bounced back from a rough August, and has back-to-back quality starts in September; over his first 12 2/3 innings of the month, he’s struck out 17 batters, issued two walks, and only allowed one earned run. His ERA is 0.71 this month.
Taijuan Walker will go for the Mets. He has a 4.29 ERA (his worst since 2015) over 27 games (26 starts) this season, with 137 strikeouts over 144 2/3 innings. He’s faced the Phillies four times this season, to the tune of a 3.80 ERA over 21 1/3 innings. They’ve homered off him four times, and scored a total of nine earned runs against him.
Walker’s August looked a lot like Wheeler’s, but where Wheeler rebounded in September, Walker’s struggles have worsened. He’s allowed six and five earned runs in his first two starts of the month, and has allowed four or more in four of his last seven starts dating back to the beginning of August. He has a 5.33 ERA and 6.22 FIP over that span.
