After an astounding win in their series opener, the Philadelphia Phillies dropped the remaining two games of the series to the Milwaukee Brewers. They are now 71-68 on the season, and remain 2 1/2 games behind the Braves in the NL East, the only division in which no team has reached 80 wins yet.

They return home with their tails between their legs to host the Colorado Rockies for a long weekend series.

Phillies Pitcher Today: Ranger Suárez

Ranger Suárez, formerly of the bullpen, will start for the Phillies tonight opposite Antonio Senzatela.

It’s astounding that people aren’t talking about Suárez more outside of the Phillies bubble. He has a 1.38 ERA over 34 games this season.

What’s more impressive is that he made the move from the bullpen back to the starting rotation in the middle of the season for the first time since 2018, and has continued to dominate.

Over 72 total innings this season, Suárez has only allowed 11 earned runs, issued 29 walks, and has struck out 72 batters. Since moving to the rotation at the beginning of August, he has a 1.71 ERA over 31 2/3 innings, with 30 strikeouts and 15 walks issued. In seven starts, he has only allowed six earned runs.

Suárez has pitched against the Rockies once before, and over three innings, he allowed three hits, one walk, one unearned run, and he struck out one batter. Not much to predict from a sample size that small.

Senzatela, who made his debut in April 2017, has a 4.16 ERA over 23 starts this season. He’s pitched against the Phillies five times throughout his career, and they hit him fairly well, to the tune of a .281/.369/.472 line and .841 OPS. He has a 4.76 ERA against them over 22 2/3 innings.

Unsurprisingly, he’s done a better job at holding them down at Citizens Bank Park, considering his home field of Coors is the most hitter-friendly ballpark in baseball. He has a 1.80 ERA in one game in Philadelphia, though he actually gave up a home run there, and has never allowed a Phillies batter to homer at Coors.
