That’s a solid ERA for most pitchers, but it’s a bummer for Wheeler, considering how dominant he’s been for most of the season.
Coming into August, he had a 2.45 ERA, but he’s allowed four or more earned runs in five of his six starts last month, and the lone scoreless start was his complete-game shutout of the Mets. His ERA for the month was 4.81, with him allowing 23 earned runs in 43 innings. He’s still pitching deep into games, but he’s not pitching effectively.
