After sweeping the Washington Nationals in dramatic come-from-behind fashion, the Philadelphia Phillies are spending the weekend in Miami, taking on another division rival who sit below them in the standings.

The Phillies have scored seven runs or more in each of their last seven games for the first time since 1933. Meanwhile, the Marlins are at the bottom of the NL East barrel, 16.5 games out of first.

Yet this series won’t be as easy as fans (and the Phillies) would think. Since the beginning of 2019, the Phillies are only 7-12 in Miami. Last fall, the 305 is where their playoff hopes were dashed.

Phillies vs Marlins Odds Today

It’s no surprise that the Phillies are favored to win tonight’s series opener, yet with this team, nothing is ever guaranteed. They’re -150 on the moneyline (bet $150 to win $100) while the poor, unfortunate fish are +120 (bet $100 to win $120).

The spread has the Phillies -1.5 at +120 (bet $100 to win $120) and the Marlins +1.5 at -140 (bet $140 to win $100).

If betting the total number of runs is your move, the over/under tonight is 7.5, with -105 on the over (bet $105 to win $100) and -115 on the under (bet $115 to win $100).

Phillies Pitcher Today: Kyle Gibson

Perhaps Gibby is the newcomer who can turn the Phillies’ Miami experience around. Gibson, acquired from the Rangers at the deadline in a significant trade package, has a 3.16 ERA over his first six games (five starts) with the Phillies.

He’s been a welcome addition to a rotation that is only consistent in its inconsistency. Over 37 innings in red pinstripes, Gibson has 22 strikeouts, has issued 12 walks, and allowed 13 earned runs. His two most recent starts have been his best, eight innings of one-run ball against the Padres, followed by six shutout innings against the Diamondbacks.

Aside from one disastrous relief appearance against the Dodgers (which I warned you about), Gibson has only allowed more than two runs once since joining the Phils.

Unfortunately, coming from the American League, Gibson has zero experience facing the Marlins, so this game is a bit of a question mark. He’ll be up against Jesús Luzardo, AKA the Lizard King.

Luzardo, who made his debut in 2019 and was traded from Oakland at the deadline, has only pitched in six games for the Marlins so far. He had a 6.87 ERA over 38 innings with the A’s this season in both starter and relief roles but has only worked out of the rotation since switching teams. Over six starts with the Marlins, he has a 7.62 ERA in 28 1/3 innings and has allowed 24 earned runs, five of them homers.

In a weird twist, Luzardo is also coming off his first scoreless start for his new team. He and Gibson will likely each be feeling confident as a result of their recent success, which should make for an interesting pitching matchup.

Phillies vs Marlins Prediction Today

The Phillies have to win this series. As the Braves flounder, this is their chance to regain the ground they lost in mid-August. The way the Marlins have played, there is no excuse for anything but a series win, better yet, a sweep.
