It’s been a pretty rough week for the Philadelphia Phillies, who were projected to win every game of their three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and instead got swept by them.

Zack Wheeler had his worst start of the season, and the offense looked lifeless. They scored six runs total in their last three games, and three runs or less in seven of their last nine. The Phils are now clinging to a barely-above-.500 record once again, all their hard work at the beginning of the month virtually erased.

Unfortunately, the road trip continues for the Phillies, who are 36-25 at home, but 25-35 on the road. They’re spending the weekend in San Diego, where the 61-60 Phillies will take on the Padres, who have also been having a rough time of it, though their record overall is much better, 67-56.

Phillies vs Padres Odds Today

The Padres are heavily favored on the moneyline at -210 (bet $210 to win $100), while the Phillies are at +185 (bet $100 to win $185).

The spread has the Phillies +1.5 at -115 (bet $115 to win $100) and the Padres -1.5 at -105 (bet $105 to win $100).

If you’re into betting the total number of runs, the over/under for the series opener is 9.0. The over is -105 (bet $105 to win $100) and the under is -115 (bet $115 to win $100).

Phillies Pitcher Today: Matt Moore

After I said that the Phillies should rid themselves of Matt Moore last week, he went out and had his best game of the season. Go figure.

He still has a 6.07 ERA this season, but in his career against the Padres, his ERA is 7.36, so that’s not ideal.

Moore’s last start was six-innings of no-hit perfection, with two walks and eight strikeouts. He lowered his ERA from 6.79 to 6.07, the lowest it’s been since July 22. While it’s unlikely that Moore will be able to replicate this performance against the likes of Fernando Tatis Jr. and Co., hopefully, he can be better than Wheeler was on Thursday. I can’t believe I just said that.

Moore is going up against Blake Snell, who hasn’t been the Cy Young he was in Tampa Bay. In his first season as a San Diego Daddy, Snell has a career-worst 4.80 ERA (his previous high was 4.29 in 2019) over 22 starts, though he’s still a strikeout machine: 130 strikeouts over 101 1/3 innings. He’s leading all of MLB with 63 walks issued, one away from matching his career-high from his Cy Young season in 2018, though he then walked 64 batters over 180 2/3 innings, so his walk rate has gotten worse, from 3.2 to a new personal worst 5.6.

Snell is coming off a solid start of five innings against the Diamondbacks, of all teams, in which he allowed two earned runs on six hits, walked two, and struck out six. He has a 1.59 ERA over three August starts, which is more like the Snell batters know and fear.
