The Philadelphia Phillies have released their 2022 spring training schedule

The Philadelphia Phillies are in the midst of a pennant race, but they’re already looking ahead to 2022, too.

On Wednesday, the Phillies released their Spring Training schedule, which will kick off on the road against the New York Yankees in split-squad form on February 26. They’ll open the 2022 regular season on the road in Houston on March 31.

Who will the Phillies play in spring training in 2022?

Their list of opponents is an interesting mix of current postseason contenders and some of the absolute worst teams in baseball. Interestingly, the Atlanta Braves are the only division rival they’ll be facing in the spring.  They also won’t face the Houston Astros or St. Louis Cardinals, whom they’ve played in past springs.

Here are all the teams the Phillies will face in Spring Training:

  • New York Yankees (6)
  • Minnesota Twins (2)
  • Toronto Blue Jays (7)
  • Boston Red Sox (2)
  • Detroit Tigers (4)
  • Baltimore Orioles (4)
  • Atlanta Braves (2)
  • Tampa Bay Rays (4)
  • Pittsburgh Pirates (3)

People love to say that Spring Training games don’t count, and they’re right, the games don’t count in the technical way. But these games provide an interesting preview of the big leaguers, the new additions made during the offseason, prospects who might make their debuts later in the year. It’s also the first look at their opponents, and a chance to scope out the competition.

In a way, the fact that the games don’t count is a win-win. If the Phillies are good, they can ride that momentum into the regular season, feeling confident and ready to take on the real challenges of the games that do count. If the Phillies struggle, it’s also okay, because it’s only spring training! The games don’t count, and they have time to heat up when it really matters.

What will the Phillies look like in 2022?

2022 will be the first season after Dave Dombrowski’s first full offseason as the Phillies’ President of Baseball Operations. A significant amount of money comes off the books after 2021, and many underperforming players likely won’t be on the roster next year.

It’s hard to predict the future, but one thing is certain: this Phillies team will look very different when Spring Training games begin next February.
