The Philadelphia Phillies are their own worst enemy yet again, as they dropped the series opener to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night.

The DBacks are a team the Phillies absolutely should be destroying, but they’d rather destroy themselves instead. They’re now 2-5 since their eight-game win streak. The only good news is that the New York Mets also cannot stop losing, and have dropped under .500 for the first time since early May.

Phillies Pitcher Today: Ranger Suárez

Ranger Suárez has been a breath of fresh air in the rotation, and his teammates can’t get enough of him.

He has a 1.07 ERA over 30 games this season, and made his return to the rotation earlier this month for the first time since 2018. Over his first three starts, he has a 0.90 ERA and opposing lineups are hitting .094/.237/.094 against him with a .331 OPS.

The key with Suárez is gradually stretching him out to pitch deeper into games. He went three innings in his first start, 2 2/3 in his second, and 4 1/3 in his most recent start, which was the first game in which he allowed an earned run. Prior to that, he had not allowed an earned run in any appearance dating back to July 17.

Suárez threw 82 pitches in his last game, a new career-high, and the most he’s thrown since June 10, 2019. The Phillies have won all three of his starts, and will look to continue that trend on Wednesday night.

The DBacks will start Humberto Castellanos, who made his debut for the Astros in 2020, and has pitched in eight games for Arizona this year. He has a 2.30 ERA, but has only made one start, which is what makes this pitching matchup interesting: two bullpen arms being used as starters.

Castellanos’ first start was a four-inning shutout, though he did allow four hits and a walk. Like Suárez, he’s not a big strikeout pitcher, but the numbers don’t lie; he gets the job done.
