The Philadelphia Phillies have won five in a row, and just swept the Washington Nationals over a four-game series.

Now, they’re home to host the New York Mets in what has to be the biggest series of the season thus far. Why? Because whoever wins tonight is in first place.

The Fightins have picked up considerable ground this week, and are only half a game out of first, thanks to some dominant pitching, a praying mantis, a pair of Harper homers, and the Best Catcher in Baseball coming through in the clutch once again.

Almost too close to call. The Phillies are -115 on the moneyline (bet $115 to win $100), while the Mets are -105 (bet $105 to win $100).

The spread has the Phillies at +1.5 at -175 (bet $175 to win $100), while the Mets are -1.5 at +145 (bet $100 to win $145).

If you’re into betting the total amount of runs, the over/under is 9.5 runs tonight. It’s -115 on the over (bet $115 to win $100) and -105 on the under (bet $105 to win $100).

Phillies Pitcher Today

RHP Kyle Gibson makes his second start in a Phillies uniform opposite RHP Marcus Stroman.

Gibson has a 2.86 ERA over 20 starts this season and is coming off a Phillies debut that saw him throw a season-high 113 pitches. The Mets also wanted to acquire him at the deadline but were informed by the Texas Rangers that the Phillies’ trade package was better. Awkward.

Stroman has been getting knocked around a lot lately; he allowed four earned runs in his last start against the Reds on August 1, and has allowed at least two earned runs in five of his last six starts dating back to the beginning of July. During that span, he has a 3.74 ERA over 33 2/3 innings, and has only struck out 23 batters. He doesn’t issue many walks, though, so if the Phillies want to get on base, they’ll have to do it without any handouts from Stro.

Take note of each starter’s run support average, too: Gibson is averaging 4.62 runs of support from his lineups, while Stroman is only averaging 3.19.

Since August 1, the Phillies have scored 43 runs and allowed 24. The Mets have scored 15 runs and allowed 25 over their first five games this month. They’ve scored 49 runs against the Phillies, but have also allowed the Phils to score 44.

This game is going to be wild.

Phillies vs Mets Prediction Today

The Phillies have a ton of momentum coming into this series from the sweep and Gibson’s debut. They also have a winning record at home (31-21) and the Mets have a losing record on the road (23-32).

This game is the Phillies’ to lose.
