The Phillies could take a flier on Alex Colomé and hope he bounces back.

It’s interesting that Alex Colomé’s name hasn’t been in more trade rumors this year. While it’s true that he isn’t having a great season, he’s been excellent in the past, and could easily bounce back from a rough start.

Another veteran, Colomé is in his ninth MLB season, but his first with the Twins. He made his debut with the Rays back in 2013, and was with them until they traded him to the Mariners during the 2018 season. He was an All-Star in 2016 and in 2017, led all of MLB with 47 saves, a career high.

He spent the last two seasons with the Chicago White Sox, and was absolutely dominant for them, posting a 2.27 ERA over 83 1/3 total innings, closing 72 games, and earning 42 saves. His 2020 season was particularly excellent; a 0.81 ERA over 21 games.

Colomé isn’t a huge strikeout guy, but he’s proof that a pitcher doesn’t have to be in order to be effective. In fact, he’s only finished a season with more strikeouts than innings pitched twice in his career, and hasn’t done so since 2018.

The Twins signed Colomé to a one-year deal valued at $6.25 million with a mutual option for 2022, so he could be an extremely affordable pickup for the Phillies with enormous upside. He’s also been named as a rental option for the Mets, which would be bad news for their division rivals in Philadelphia.
