Phillies infielder Ronald Torreyes is underrated
Torreyes might not hit for power, but he’s one of Joe Girardi’s guys – he calls him “To” – for a reason.
In Saturday’s 13-6 win over the Giants, which would end up being Philadelphia’s only win of the series, Torreyes contributed with a two-run double and solo homer, his second of the season.
Torreyes has only played in 27 games for the Phillies this season, but he’s hitting .268/.294/.415 with a .709 OPS, his best in any season of his 7-career in which he’s appeared in more than nine games (he had a .929 OPS in 8 games as a rookie in 2015.)
But his bat is almost considered a bonus; with Didi Gregorius rehabbing in the minor leagues, Torreyes has bolstered the infield defense. First baseman Rhys Hoskins called him a “sparkplug” over the weekend, and Girardi could not stop singing his praises:
"“He does so many things right. People say, ‘Why do you love Torreyes?’ He’s a ballplayer. That’s what he is. He really understands the game and I trust him wherever I put him. I don’t ever have to worry about him being prepared. That’s a luxury for a manager. I don’t know where we’d be without him.” – Joe Girardi, Phillies manager"
