We’re checking in on which Phillies need to improve to make the team

Last month, we previewed three Philadelphia Phillies with something to prove in spring training.

With the regular season about two weeks away, let’s check in on how those Phillies are doing.

Nick Williams

Outfielder Nick Williams is trying to earn his spot as a primary back-up to the expected starting trio of Andrew McCutchen, Adam Haseley and Bryce Harper, and the former top prospect Williams had a strong start to spring before fading.

In his first game on February 22 against the Detroit Tigers, Williams went 1-1 with two walks. That hit was an RBI-double, which is his only extra base hit of spring training and one of only two RBIs.

In his next game out, on February 24th against the Baltimore Orioles, he went 1-2. Since then, no hits in eight games.

His second RBI came by way of a sacrifice fly on March 6 against the Tigers.

Overall, Williams is 2-23 (a .087 batting average!) with five walks and two RBIs in ten games.

Time is running out for Williams to prove his worth.

As it is, his fellow back-up outfielders are posting better numbers.

Roman Quinn is slightly better, going 4-20 with three walks, one home run and two RBIs in nine games.

Jay Bruce is 6-18 with one home run and four RBIs in seven games.

Even Kyle Garlick, who made his MLB debut last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers before being traded to the Phillies over the winter, is 5-22 with two walks and two RBIs in ten games so far this spring.

Williams will continue to be a Phillie with something to prove in baseball’s pre-season.
