Can the Phillies afford to pull off another blockbuster trade this offseason?

Last offseason the Phillies pulled off two blockbuster trades, adding Jean Segura and J.T. Realmuto, who’d prove himself to be the best catcher in baseball.

This offseason the script is slightly different for general manager Matt Klentak. The idea of spending stupid money appears to be off the table, especially after adding starting pitcher Zack Wheeler to a nine-figure contract.

While Phillies fans would love to sign Gerritt Cole and Anthony Rendon, the reality is the price tag might be too much for the Phillies this offseason. The contracts of Wheeler, Bryce Harper, and Segura, combined with the potential extension for Realmuto, limits the team to what they can spend this offseason.

While the Phillies will certainly remain players in free agency, they, unfortunately, can’t go on the spending spree fans want to see. One year deals for Didi Gregorius or other stopgaps who were non-tendered are still possible, but for now the Phillies are likely to look elsewhere for help.

This means the Phillies are likely to play in the trade market for both controllable players and those on one-year deals who can help the team right now. We took a look at MLB Trade Rumors’ top-25 trade candidates and picked out which ones could help the Phillies this year and potentially beyond.
