Phillies trade rumor: Club scouting Reds, Pirates Monday night
Another Phillies trade rumor has them scouting the National League Central.
Phillies general manager Matt Klentak is known for making deals, evident of the consistent Phillies trade rumor news bubbling as the trade deadline approaches.
After trading for minor league infielder Jose Pirela and veteran starter Jason Vargas, the Phillies are reportedly scouting a game that could feature some reliever help.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Phillies are among several clubs scouting Monday night’s game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds.
The Pirates and Reds are both in the basement of the National League Central and unlikely to make a Wild Card push. Pittsburgh has prized closer Felipe Vazquez reportedly available at a high price, while the Reds have reportedly dangled their closer Raisel Iglesias.
Vazquez has saved 21 games this year, but the Pirates would likely ask for a top prospect from Philadelphia given his very friendly contract with four years remaining.
Iglesias, who has saved 77 games over the last three seasons, has two years remaining on his deal with Cincinnati.
While unlikely, outfielders Yasiel Puig or Starling Marte could be trade options if the Phillies want a veteran outfielder to replace Odubel Herrera.
We looked at the prospects of adding Marte earlier this season when the Phillies lost Herrera to a season-long suspension. Infielder Derek Dietrich, who has 19 home runs for the Reds, could be an addition to the bench for Philadelphia.
