What’s the latest on Phillies shortstop Jean Segura after a slide at second?

Phillies fans held their collective breathe during Sunday afternoon’s win over the Braves when shortstop Jean Segura went down with a lower-body injury.

The injury came when Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna stole second base in the seventh inning and slid into Segura. J.T. Realmuto’s throw from behind the plate was low and Acuna hit something (either his head or shoulder) on Segura.

Both Acuna and Segura went down, but Segura limped off the field with help.

The official word on Segura is that he suffered a contusion, thankfully no sprain or breaks. The slide wasn’t what caused the injury, but rather Realmuto’s low throw that hit Segura in the leg.

Scott Kingery moved from the outfield to shortstop in place of Segura, but the Phillies can’t afford to lose Segura at this point in the season. Having already lost Andrew McCutchen to a knee injury and Jay Bruce to an oblique, the offense going into Sunday’s game had been pitiful.

Thankfully Segura is ok and the team can rest him with an off-day on Monday.

Segura’s injury came in a horrendous inning all the way around for the Phillies. Aaron Nola cruised through the first six innings allowing no runs on three hits. Atlanta jumped on him with two home runs to score four just before Segura went down.

Thankfully the Phillies offense carried their end of the bargain with four home runs, including a grand slam from Realmuto. Bryce Harper, Adam Haseley, and Rhys Hoskins each supplied a dinger of their own in a 9-4 win.

The Phillies bullpen also came up big after Nola was pulled in the seventh inning. Adam Morgan finished the inning and Nick Pivetta came up with two shutout innings to finish the win.
