Amid the Phillies trade rumor mill comes their first move of July.

Finally, a Phillies trade rumor that came to fruition early Saturday morning after a big win against the Pittsburg Pirates.

The Phillies announced on Twitter that they’ve acquired right-handed reliever Mike Morin for cash considerations.

To make room for Morin on the 40-man roster the Phillies placed reliever Seranthony Dominguez on the 60-day injured list with an elbow injury likely ending his season.

Morin was designated for assignment by the first place Twins despite having a 3.18 ERA in 23 appearances this season. The Minnesota native has walked just two batters and struck out 11 in 22.2 innings in his first season for Minnesota after stints with the Angels, Royals, and Mariners.

Just 28-years-old Morin has flashed some upside despite a 5.56 ERA in his last four seasons. He appeared in just 19 big league games over the last two seasons and spent most of last season in Triple-A.

Morin has primarily appeared late in games for Minnesota this year, entering in the seventh inning or later in 20 of 23 appearances. His last appearance for Minnesota was a rough one, allowing four earned runs in one inning.

With injuries to Dominguez, David Robertson, Pat Neshek, Tommy Hunter, and many others in the Phillies bullpen, the addition of Morin could be a low-risk high-reward win for Matt Klentak. Philadelphia virtually loses nothing in this deal and gets to test out a young arm in a battered bullpen.

Morin is also controllable with arbitration eligibility set through the 2020 season. It’s a move that not only could help the Phillies reach the playoffs for the first time since 2011, but could help build off a strong 2019 campaign.
