The White Sox have offered eight years and $250 million to Manny Machado. The Phillies will have to top that offer to land the star infielder.

After some time speculating just how much the Phillies will have to offer Manny Machado, we finally have an exact offer the White Sox have made to the star infielder.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reported that Chicago upped their offer for Machado to eight years from seven. Hector Gomez of Z101, who reported that the Machado race is down to Philadelphia and Chicago, reported that they offered Machado $250 million.

These reports appear to be pretty legitimate. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that no such eight-year offer was put on the table. However, the official MLB Twitter account tweeted about the offer (although they did delete it later).

More from That Balls Outta Here

This contract works out to $31.25 million per year for Machado, which would make him the fifth-highest player in the league in 2019. The deal may not have the term he was looking for at the start of the offseason, but the salary would be more than enough.

The Phillies now have the ball in their court when it comes to Machado. They should be able to top this offer without much trouble, both in terms of years and salary. An offer has reportedly been in the works for some time now, and they now know what they need to top.

A key factor in the team’s decision about Machado is the changing tide in the Bryce Harper sweepstakes.

After their meeting Saturday, the industry consensus now is that Philadelphia is the leading contender to land Harper. Todd Zolecki of MLB.com went so far as to say the team may be shifting their focus from Machado to Harper.

Next. Bryce Harper to the Phillies almost inevitable. dark

This shift towards Harper may soon force Machado to make his decision. If Chicago’s offer is the best on the table, Machado may have to take it whether he likes it or not.
