A big break in the latest Phillies rumors involving Patrick Corbin

Twitter is abuzz with the latest Phillies rumors that free agent pitcher Patrick Corbin is in Philadelphia and visiting the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park

Jim Salisbury of NBCS Philadelphia and Todd Zolecki of MLB.com confirmed the rumor reported by Chris Jones, a consistent voice on Phillies Twitter, but nothing has been reported regarding a potential deal. However, if Corbin is at Citizens Bank Park today that’s a very good sign for the Phillies, who have been aggressive this offseason.

Jones provided this pictures from someone he knows at the ballpark with Corbin on the scoreboard.

Zolecki said Friday he thought the team was closing in on a signing and Jon Morosi said the Phillies wouldn’t wait for a big name like Bryce Harper or Manny Machado to make their decision to make other big moves.

More from Phillies Rumors

Corbin is regarded by most around baseball as the top starting pitcher on the free agent market. He fills a major need for the Phillies as a top of the rotation lefty coming out of Arizona where he had a 3.15 ERA.

If the Phillies do sign Corbin it gives them a top of the rotation with him, Jake Arrieta, and Cy Young finalist Aaron Nola. That would also leave one of the following young pitchers out of a job: Vince Velasquez, Zach Eflin, Jerad Eickhoff, Enyel De Los Santos, Ranger Suarez, or Nick Pivetta.

The Phillies reportedly had discussions with Corbin’s former team the Diamondbacks regarding Eflin in a potential deal for Paul Goldschmidt that fell apart.

It’s likely the Phillies move at least one of those aforementioned young pitchers to beef up their lineup or prospect pool going into the 2019 season.
