Now that the Phillies trade rumors have finally materialized into something, what’s next?

Phillies trade rumors have been rampant, and finally, we got the news that Asdrubal Cabrera has been acquired from the New York Mets for prospect Franklyn Kilome.

Cabrera projects to start over Scott Kingery and J.P. Crawford at shortstop, which moves both young players to the bench. This move not only upgrades the shortstop position but gives the Phillies bench the depth it’s lacked for most of the season.

Additionally, the Phillies brought up outfielder Roman Quinn to be the number four man over Aaron Altherr. That now brings the bench to be Kingery, Quinn, Andrew Knapp, Trevor Plouffe, and Jesmuel Valentin. That’s a major upgrade to the bench, which has been barren this season.

Now that the shortstop position is solidified, what’s next for the Phillies?

More from Phillies Rumors

They could still add an outfielder either by July 31 or in August at the waiver trade deadline. Adam Jones and Curtis Granderson have been mentioned as veteran bats who have caught the organizations eye. Jones would be trickier to acquire because of his 10-5 rights to reject any trade sent his way.

Another arm in the bullpen is always a possibility despite their success lately. Adam Morgan continues to struggle with a 4.76 ERA, so another lefty could be brought in.

I don’t expect the organization to make a move for a big-time closer such as Raisel Iglesias from the Reds. Brad Hand showed what the closer market is, and it’s not a friendly one for Philadelphia.

It’s very well possible the Phillies stand pat beyond Cabrera, but don’t be shocked if they add another outfielder or a reliever before the 4 p.m. deadline on Tuesday.
