The Prospects Are Coming

August has been an interesting month for the Phillies.

The young prospects are finally starting to make their entrances onto the big stage, players are playing out of their positions, and Adam Morgan is pitching…well.

The last few months will be crucial to see which players have made their mark and which players may have worn out their welcome.

Let’s take a look at who were the best and worst Phillies in August.

Least Valuable Position Player

Maikel Franco

Franco has struggled this year and August was no different. The once star powered third baseman hit just .202 in the month with just two home runs. Franco may begin to find himself as the odd man out as the Phillies have already begun experimenting with J.P. Crawford at third base.

Least Valuable Pitcher

Nick Pivetta

Pivetta’s August was forgettable, to say the least. The righty gave up 24 earned runs in just 18.2 innings of work. Pivetta has proven to be an enigma as he can be as hot and cold as they come.

As for August, his .384 BAA proves that he was ice cold.

If he can find a happy medium, he can serve as a nice back end of the rotation piece in years to come.

Most Valuable Position Player

Rhys Hoskins

Hoskins is just an incredible story. The rookie took the Majors by storm in his first month as he crushed 11 home runs and drove in 25 RBIs in just 22 games.

The converted left fielder has proven to be the high point in a rather disappointing Phillies season.

I also have to tip my cap to Odubel Herrera, who if not for Hoskins’ history making month, would have been the easy pick for MVPP.

Most Valuable Pitcher

Holby Milner and Adam Morgan

The lefties were phenomenal is August posting a combined 0.63 ERA in the month…and that’s all Morgan.

Milner threw ten scoreless innings in relief, and although the numbers aren’t eye-popping, he still did enough to throw a clean sheet for the month.

Morgan, on the other hand, fanned 22 over 14.1 innings of work. The oft ridiculed lefty…mainly by myself…proved that some players deserve a 14th chance to prove that they can be part of the major league staff.
