Phillies Rival Signs All-Star Starter Who Could Cause Philadelphia Fits

Phillies division rival Miami Marlins have signed a pitcher who has give Philadelphia fits throughout his career

Edinson Volquez has experienced a roller coaster of a career, going from an All-Star rookie to a starter with an ERA above 5.00 just last season.

Bright spots of Volquez’s have come against the Phillies, whom Volquez has held to a .207 batting average through six games.

Philadelphia will get a chance to see Volquez even more, as the Miami Marlins have reportedly signed the pitcher to a two-year contract. Volquez’s new deal is reportedly worth $22 million, pending a physical.

Volquez won a World Series ring with the Kansas City Royals, but suffered a down season in 2016. He won 10 games, but produced an ERA of 5.37 through 34 games. The veteran also allowed a league-high 113 earned runs, the second time in his career he’s allowed the most runs in the league.

The Phillies saw Volquez during his seven seasons in the National League, which included stops in Cincinnati, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh. Inside Citizens Bank Park, Volquez has held the Phillies to four runs in three games, and left them with a .203 batting average at home.

Volquez will join a Marlins pitching staff that tragically lost Jose Fernandez in a deadly boating accident late in the season. The projected staff for 2017 could possibly include Adam Conley, Wei-Yin Chen, Tom Koehler, and Jose Urena.

Miami will face the Phillies for the first time in 2017 on April 25 in Citizens Bank Park for a three game series to begin their season series.
