The Phillies have made a roster move within their bullpen
Daniel Stumpf has struggled since returning from his 80 game PED suspension. To no surprise, the Phillies designed to designate the 25-year-old lefty for assignment Friday afternoon.
In five total innings, Stumpf had a 10.80 ERA while allowing nine runs on six hits. He only gave up one home run, and walked two additional batters.
To replace Stumpf on the 25-man roster, the Phillies recalled Severino Gonzalez from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Stumpf, a Rule 5 pick out of the Kansas City Royals organization, only made seven appearances out of the Phillies bullpen this season. He was suspended after three of those appearances after testing positive for the steroid dehydrochlormethyltestosterone.
Following the all-star game, Stumpf made his final four appearances for the Phillies, but failed to pitch effectively as a middle-reliever.
Should a team fail to make a move for Stumpf, which is the likeliest situation, the Phillies can either grant him his full release or send him to the minors.
Severino Gonzalez has pitched in 11 games this year for the Phillies while bouncing between Lehigh Valley and the big leagues. He’s posted a 3.38 ERA in 13.1 innings, and has struckout 17 batters.
Between his time in Reading and Lehigh Valley this season, Gonzalez has a 2.50 ERA in 21 games. The Phillies originally tabbed him to be a starter when he was originally called up last season, but a rough 2015 campaign resulted in him making a transition to the bullpen. As a starter for the Phillies, Gonzalez was 3-3 with a 7.92 ERA in seven starts.
Gonzalez will be available when the Phillies begin their 10-game road trip, starting in Pittsburgh Friday night. Rookie Zach Eflin will take the mound for the first game of the trip against the Pirates.
