NERIS TO THE SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS

The Giants reportedly were scouting the Phillies recently with a specific eye towards the club’s bullpen pieces. While much of that speculation was on closer Jeanmar Gomez and veteran David Hernandez, perhaps they changed their mind on seeing Neris.

The fact is that the GMen are looking to win a World Series. They lead the NL West by 4.5 games over their arch-rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Right now they are going with 35-year old Santiago Casilla as the closer.

While Casilla has been fine (though not spectacular) and his righty setup men such as Hunter Strickland, Albert Suarez, Derek Law, and George Kontos have been okay, someone with a chance to dominate for years to come would be attractive.

San Fran has some strong young starting pitching possibilities coming through their system, but the Phillies are not likely to be able to get either Phil Bickford or Tyler Beede in a Neris deal.

However, if the Giants would come off 23-year old righty Sam Coonrod or 23-year old lefty Andrew Suarez, well, Klentak would have to think long and hard. I’ve been a Coonrod fan for a while now, so let’s make it him.
