The Philadelphia Phillies and their fans enjoyed a winning week leading into the MLB All-Star break.

The Phillies finished the week with a 5-2 record, sweeping the Braves at home and splitting a four game set with the Rockies out in Colorado to close out the first half of the 2016 season.

The offense came alive this week, as the Fightin’ Phils slugged 13 home runs. Maikel Franco was red-hot, blasting three long balls (and homering in four consecutive games going back to last week).

More from That Balls Outta Here

On the flip side, Peter Bourjos and Odubel Herrera each cooled off at the plate, and saw their respective hitting streaks come to an end.

Cameron Rupp had a big game on Sunday, finishing the day 4-4 with a homer and four RBI in the Phillies 10-3 rout of Colorado. Rupp batted .267 on the week, but has emerged as an offensive force behind the plate for the Fightins this year.

Let’s take a look at who was ‘Surging’ and ‘Struggling’ for the Phillies as they headed into the MLB All-Star break.

SURGING BATS

Tommy Joseph bounced back nicely after struggling over the last few weeks. The young first baseman hit .571 with three homers and five RBI. He finished a triple shy of the cycle in Saturday’s 8-3 loss against the Rockies.

Andres Blanco also bounced back nicely after struggling at the plate last week. Blanco batted .500 with a double in four games played.

Freddy Galvis broke out of his slump in a big way, hitting .417 with a homer and four RBI.

Maikel Franco had another fantastic week at the plate, hitting .400 with three homers (including this bomb against the Rockies) and five RBI.

Cesar Hernandez continues to hit well, batting .348 for the week with two stolen bases.

STRUGGLING BATS

Peter Bourjos cold off at the plate after a scorching hot June. Bourjos batted just .238 with a homer and five strikeouts in five games played.

Rule 5 pick Tyler Goeddel continues to struggle mightily, finishing the week 0-11 at the plate.

Ryan Howard continued to struggle, batting just .222, but he did manage a homer in three games played this week.

Cody Asche also cooled down considerably this week, batting a measly .176  with a homer.

Odubel Herrera, the Phillies lone All Star this season, hit just .174 with eight strikeouts in six games. Here’s hoping Herrera will get a chance to play in the All Star Game tonight, and get back on track when the second half of the season resumes on Friday.

Jeanmar Gomez, Brett Oberholtzer, and David Hernandez had nice week’s out of the pen, combining for six scoreless innings with six strikeouts.

Jeremy Hellickson continues to pitch well for the Phillies, giving up just one earned run over six innings in Wednesday’s win against the Braves. Hellickson continues to position himself as a strong trade candidate for the team.

STRUGGLING ARMS

Adam Morgan had a terrible outing in place of Aaron Nola. The lefty gave up six earned runs (including three long balls) in just five innings pitched in the team’s loss to Colorado on Thursday. Morgan was optioned to AAA immediately following the game.

Edubray Ramos had a poor week out of the pen, giving up five earned runs in just 2.1 innings pitched.

After a string of terrific starts, Jerad Eickhoff struggled mightily in the team’s loss to the Rockies on Saturday. Eickhoff gave up eight earned runs in just 5.1 innings pitched against Colorado. Here’s hoping he can shake off the poor start and get back on track after the All Star Break.

On Tuesday night, slugger Giancarlo Stanton of the Phillies NL East-rival Miami Marlins won the Home Run Derby in epic fashion.

Tonight the NL battles AL in the 2016 MLB All-Star Game in San Diego. The winning league’s World Series representative will receive home field advantage in the Fall Classic thanks to the outcome of this Midsummer Classic.

On Friday, the Fightins will resume the second half of the season against the division rival New York Mets at Citizen’s Bank Park. The Phils trail both the Mets and Marlins by just six games in the NL Wildcard race.
