MLB Draft: TBOH 1st Round Mock

The Phillies selected Nola out of LSU with the 7th overall selection in the 1st Round of the 2014 MLB Draft. The club holds the 10th overall pick this year.

The Major League Baseball 2015 First-Year Player Draft kicks off this coming Monday night, with MLB Draft coverage beginning at 6pm on both the MLB Network and at the MLB.com website.

The Phillies hold the 10th overall pick in the 1st Round, making this the 2nd consecutive season that the organization will pick in the Top 10. Last year they chose RHP Aaron Nola with the 7th overall pick.

A few weeks back, in my first draft-related article, I opined that the Phils should seriously consider college outfielder Ian Happ with their pick. Happ will make an excellent prospect for some team. Now as the actual Amateur Draft draws closer, I’m beginning to refine the overall possibilities, and have a new prospect to consider.

The following is my own MLB Mock Draft, compiled using the information that is publicly available through numerous sources on the internet, and based on organizational needs in some cases. As with all the “Mocks” out there, it’s purely speculative. But I hope that it adds to your enjoyment of the process, and we’ll see how I do come Monday.

1. Arizona Diamondbacks

All the late buzz is on the Dbacks taking one of the top shortstops, and looking more and more like Swanson is their man.. Shortstop. Vanderbilt. Dansby Swanson. 1. player. 8

2. Houston Astros

A lot of folks thinking the college angle and Alex Bregman here. Could be, but I think Rodgers is better. He’ll take longer to develop. They have time.. Shortstop. Lake Mary (Fla.) HS. Brendan Rodgers. 2. player. 135

3. Colorado Rockies

Tyler Jay. 3. player. 108. The safest prediction here, which means they likely don’t pick him. Would seriously consider Rodgers if he is still available here.. LHP. Illinois

4. Texas Rangers

95. Mars needs women. Texas needs arms. He may be the best in this draft.. RHP. Vanderbilt. Carson Fulmer. 4. player

5. Houston Astros

UC Santa Barbara. Dillon Tate. 5. player. 135. They go position player at #2, arm at #6. Have to come away with an impact arm with one of these picks.. RHP

6. Minnesota Twins

Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy, McDonough, Ga.. Daz Cameron. 6. player. 2. The Twins want Cameron. Many other mocks say he won’t be here. Mine says he will.. Outfield

7. Boston Red Sox 8. Chicago White Sox 9. Chicago Cubs

9. player. 9. The Cubs know they need arms, but I think, and I think they think, they can buy or trade for those. Another impact bat.. Outfield. Arkansas. Andrew Benintendi

12. Miami Marlins

82. Another bat that I wouldn’t mind seeing the Phils grab, seems like a typical Marlin to me.. Outfield. Richland HS, North Richland Hills, Texas. Trenton Clark. 12. player

13. Tampa Bay Rays

The Rays are the AL’s pitching organization. They grab another to develop in their stable.. RHP. Louisville. Kyle Funkhouser. 13. player. 21

14. Atlanta Braves

Stroudsburg (Pa.) HS. Mike Nikorak. 14. player. 17. The Braves are the NL’s pitching organization. They get back to that with this great value pick here.. RHP

15. Milwaukee Brewers

Outfield. Cincinnati. Ian Happ. 15. player. 76. Frankly, this is pure speculation. I’m a big Happ fan, and the draft muddles here. As good as any pick left.

16. New York Yankees

Phil Bickford. 16. player. 43. The Yanks want an arm, and might be getting a steal here, as Bickford again looked good this spring.. RHP. JC of Southern Nevada

17. Cleveland Indians 18. San Francisco Giants

BA sees them reaching for Nolan Watson here. Russell has tough talent to pass up though, if still around.. RHP. Cathedral Catholic HS, Indianapolis. Ashe Russell. 18. player. 31

19. Pittsburgh Pirates

4. Wouldn’t surprise me at all to see a team in this range reach for a stud injury-risk guy.. LHP. IMG Academy. Brady Aiken. 19. player

20. Oakland Athletics

player. 96. Most are thinking arm here. But when I look at Whitely, I see an A’s jersey on him.. Outfield. Niskayuna (N.Y.) HS. Garrett Whitley. 20

Another pick that seems to have become obvious. Hope no one steals him.. Shortstop. Griffin (Ga.) HS. Cornelius Randolph. 21. player. 7

UCLA. James Kaprielian. 24. player. 71. Could go anywhere in previous dozen picks. But a UCLA guy sliding to the Dodgers? Yes, please.. RHP

25. Baltimore Orioles

25. player. 11. Matt Wieters has future 1st baseman written all over him.. Catcher. Kennesaw Mountain (Ga.) HS. Tyler Stephenson

26. Los Angeles Angels

Arizona. Kevin Newman. 26. player. 102. Someone is going to get a sweet-swinging, leadership 2B in this kid.. Shortstop
