Emotional reaction immediately after the game

The Phillies won! The Phillies won! It’s been a while since I could say that.

Less emotional, more optimistic reaction after thinking about it a bit

Ten hits and seven walks; the Phillies are getting runners on base. That’s a good thing!

Hero

Jake Diekman – perhaps the Phillies best reliever at this point – entered the game in relief of an injured A.J. Burnett. He faced a bases loaded, one out situation, but got out of it by striking out the next two hitters.

Goat

The Marlins were counting on Jose Fernandez to stop their three game losing streak. He responded with one of the worst starts of his career.

Today’s Game

Miami Marlins (5-6) at Philadelphia Phillies (4-6)

Game time: 7:05 PM

TV: CN8

Starting pitchers: Nate Eovaldi (1-1) vs, Jonathan Pettibone (0-0)

Quick Preview

Due to the Phillies postponing Monday’s game (Maybe they should have postponed it even further), they needed a fifth starter sooner than expected. Their choice for the job: Jonathan Pettibone.

Pettibone is making his 2014 debut. He was called up early in the 2013 to replace an injured John Lannan in the rotation and made a strong accounting for himself. Unfortunately, his season was cut short by an injury of his own. He suffered a relapse in Spring Training, but he is apparently ready to go. I am slightly skeptical, and I think David Buchanan is the most deserving of the start. But Pettibone is on the 40 man roster, and Buchanan is not, so Pettibone gets the call.

The Marlins hope to end their four-game losing streak behind Nate Eovaldi. The young righty has established himself as a strikeout pitcher, racking up 14 Ks in 13 innings pitched this year. Perhaps more impressively, he only has one walk to go along with the strikeouts.

Link of Interest

The Good PhightScoring more, but allowing even more-er

The good news is that the Phillies have been better on offense thus far this season. They’ve been getting on base at an impressive rate, and the result has been more runs scored. The bad news is that the pitching has gotten worse, and that’s more than offset the improvement by the offense.
